The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit of the Richardson Police Department began in 2002. The primary goal of the unit is to inspect and reduce the amount of crashes, deaths, and damage to roadways caused by over weight and poorly maintained vehicles. Officers selected to perform this assignment are certified in license and weight violations and certified Inspectors by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Motor Carrier Bureau.

The unit is assisted by Richardson’s Field Operation Volunteers, who work with the Officer’s during the inspections and assist with all phases of the inspection process.

Certification consists of courses taught through the Texas Department of Public Safety to become certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. Officers must complete a minimum of 32 Level 1 inspections and are required to re-certify each year.
