The Crash Investigation Unit is a specialized group of patrol and traffic officers who serve on the team as a secondary assignment. They use mathematical analysis obtained from crash scene data to assist in determining the circumstances and causes surrounding a crash. They also use forensic mapping equipment that aids in mapping the physical evidence found at the crash scene.

Crash Team Investigators work fatalities, crashes involving serious bodily injuries, crashes involving city owned vehicles and hit and run crashes. They are responsible for preparing and filing cases with the District Attorney's Office for Manslaughter, Intoxication Manslaughter, Criminally Negligent Homicide, Intoxication Assault and Failure to Stop and Render Aid.
