The Richardson Police Department Traffic Unit was first established in 1978 in an effort to reduce crashes throughout the city. Traffic Unit officers work various locations based on citizen complaints and high crash areas. The goal of the Traffic Unit is to gain voluntary compliance of the state's traffic laws. The Traffic Unit works on the principle of the three "E’s": Education, Enforcement, and Engineering.
Education: Officers inform the public through various contacts about their driving habits and how to correct them.
Enforcement: Officers issue traffic citations based on the severity of the violation and the overall safety of the motoring public.
Engineering: Officers work closely with the City’s Traffic Department to point out different areas of the city that may need changes to help facilitate the flow of traffic throughout the city.
